Bernice
"Bee" Cullinan is the ninth recipient of the NCTE
Outstanding Educator in the English Language Arts Award.
The
Outstanding ELA Award recognizes
a distinguished national or international educator who
has made major contributions to the field of language
arts in elementary education.
Bee
is a book person, she collects books, writes books,
reads books, chooses books for children and young
adults. She was president of the International Reading
Association, traveled all over the world, and
established a poetry award at the National Council of
Teachers of English.
Some of the
books she has written or edited include, Encyclopedia of
Children's Literature Edited with Diane Person;
Encyclopedia of Young Adult Literature, Edited
with Bonnie Kunzel and Deborah Wooten; Literature and
the Child - sixth edition with Lee Galda.

At Cedarville College,
Bernice studied two years in one
(summer, winter, summer), and started teaching first grade
in Middletown, Ohio. She taught every year and finished her
Bachelor's Degree at Ohio State University. She continued
going to school and teaching. She earned her Master's
Degree and her Ph.D. at Ohio State University. She taught a
few courses at Ohio State but then moved to New York
University and taught there for 35 years. She has written
numerous books including:
Literature and the Child,
Read To Me: Raising
Kids Who Love to Read,
The Continuum Encyclopedia of
Children's Literature and the
Continuum of Young Adult
Literature.
